The man behind some of the most popular video game franchises in history is implying that he will try to work his magic again in 2014. Shigeru Miyamoto recently gave an interview with Japanese website Famitsu, translated by Polygon, in which he hinted at working on a new franchise for Nintendo to be released sometime in 2014.
When discussing the most recent update to the Wii U, Miyamoto dropped some interesting hints at what his future holds, including working on something completely new:
"With the most recent version update...the system runs a lot better, and while there will continue to be improvements in the future, I think it's to the point where it's a convenient thing to have in the living room. Of course, these sorts of updates mean nothing if we don't put out games for it, and I hope people are looking forward to the games coming up. We'll have Mario Kart 8 out next spring, and at that point we'll have the whole lineup in place, so I think it's about time we brought out a new franchise. I can't give out details, but that's the title that's been keeping me pretty busy lately."
It will be interesting to see what the creator of Mario and The Legend of Zelda has in store, and if his new idea for a franchise can match the success of those massive franchises. After all, the Wii U has not sold as well as it could have, with many blaming a lack of blockbuster and first-party titles for the console's slow start. With Miyamoto and his team already working on several existing franchises along with this new franchise, and with Nintendo starting another new IP with The Wonderful 101, it may be time for the Wii U to finally start shining soon.
