Google's Android has maintained its first place position as the top mobile operating system in the United Kingdom.

According to figures by Kantar Worldpanel, Android experienced a 4.5 percent increase when comparing the three months ending in May 2013 to the same period in 2012.

Android's three-month period, ending in May 2013, accounted for 56.6 percent of the smartphone operating system sales share. Of the five operating systems Kantar provided, the Android platform saw the most gains.

Finishing in a distant second place is Apple's iOS. The Apple mobile operating system saw a minor increase of 0.8 percent for the three-month period ending in May 2013. iOS finished with 29.9 percent, up from the 29.1 percent during the same period in 2012.

Microsoft has a reason to celebrate. It saw the most gains after Android with a 3.7 percent increase from last year. The Windows Phone platform amassed 7.8 percent of the market share.

Not far behind Windows Phone was BlackBerry, which previously held the third place position last year. BlackBerry garnered 5.3 percent of the market share, which is a decrease of 7.3 percent from last year.

Symbian rounded the top five with 1.4 percent. Symbian's fifth-place finish is a 4.8 percent drop from 2012.
