The Los Angeles Dodgers are among seven teams interested in trading for Chicago Cubs starter Matt Garza with just roughly four weeks left before the mid-season trade deadline, a league insider reported on Thursday.
With the Dodgers finally back in contention for a division title (thanks to the rise of rookie Yasiel Puig), the free-spending baseball club is reportedly looking to add Garza to its already imposing roster of starters, which includes former National League CY Young Winner Clayton Kershaw and Hyun-Jin Ryu.
Possessing a number of trade assets in its roster, the Dodgers could consider unloading one of the team's big contracts or sending minor league prospects and draft picks to the Cubs for Garza, who has been red-hot as of late.
Garza allowed only three runs over his last three starts (all victories) and is currently holding a 4-1 slate with 3.34 ERA and 52 strikeouts.
Other teams that expressed interest for Garza include the Texas Rangers, Baltimore Orioles, Toronto Blue Jays, San Francisco Giants and San Diego Padres.
Meanwhile, the New York Yankees are reportedly looking to add firepower in their batting order to offset the absence of Mark Teixeira (done for the entire season with right wrist injury), Derek Jeter, and Alex Rodriguez.
Philadelphia Phillies Michael Young is being brought up as a quick solution to the Yankees slugging slump.
Young is batting .285 with five home runs, 21 RBIs, and 33 runs this season for the Phillies this season. Although Young has veto rights, CBS Sports insider said it's unlikely for Young to stop a trade for a contender.
The Yankees (45-39) are not in an ideal position right now after sliding to third place in the AL East Standings, though they are still in the ball game with the Baltimore Orioles (48-37) and Boston Red Sox (52-34) not far away.
