Sprinters really showcased their skills through the streets of Marseille on Stage 5 with Great Britain's Mark Cavendish winning the Cagnes-sur-Mer to Marseille race.
The Omega Pharma-Quick Step rider finished the 228.5 kilometer race with a time of 5 hours 31 minutes 51 seconds, just ahead of rival Edvald Boasson Hagen of Team Sky and green jersey wearer Peter Sagan of Cannondale.
Three members of the Team Time Trial-winner Orica-GreenEDGE are still leading the General Classification standings after five stages. Michael Albasini of Switzerland is currently in third, Daryl Impey of South Africa is in second, and Simmon Gerrans still held the yellow jersey for the second consecutive stage.
2013 Tour de France favorite Chris Froome remains within striking distance before the mountainous stages as he sits in seventh place in the standings.
Like yesterday's sprinter battle, the sixth stage of the tour features a flat road but weather is expected to give racers a hard time cruising the 176.5 kilometer path. Strong winds and scorching hot temperature may be the prevailing factor in the race, which is anticipated to be contested again by the sprinters.
