Microsoft has revealed the second game in their new Games With Gold promotion. The program aims to compete with Sony's Instant Game Collection on the PlayStation Network.

Games With Gold allows Xbox Live Gold subscribers to download a different game for free every two weeks. The program kicked off at the beginning of this month with the tower-defense title Defense Grid: The Awakening, a game that was originally available through Xbox Live Arcade. Defense Grid will be available for free until July 15.

According to Larry "Major Nelson" Hryb, the next title will be Assassin's Creed 2, an addition which was originally teased at this past E3. Assassin's Creed 2 will be available to download on July 16, when the previous promotion expires.

Assassin's Creed 2 was developed and published by Ubisoft. It was originally released in 2007 as a direct sequel to the first Assassin's Creed. It was very well received, garnering an aggregate score of 90% on the Xbox 360 according to Metacritic.com.

Halo 3 has also been confirmed as a future entry, although past that Microsoft has not released any hints as to what games would be given away. Originally announced during E3, Microsoft has promised to run the Games With Gold promotion until at least the Xbox One launch in November, with a new game available on the 1st and 16th of every month.

The promotion is comparable to what Sony is offering through PlayStation Plus. Sony's Instant Game Collection has to date offered 64 different games for free between the PlayStation Plus and the PS Vita. It launched the program about a year ago, and has included titles such as Uncharted 3, Demon's Souls, Shadow of the Colussus HD, and many others.

Currently, PlayStation 3 owners with a PlayStation Plus account can download XCOM: Enemy Unknown as well as Saint's Row The Third for free.
