The popular flash game Runescape will be getting an official upgrade, as Jagex has announced to IGN that Runescape 3 will launch on July 22, giving the series a much needed boost.
Runescape 3 will update the twelve year old in many different ways, ranging from improving the graphics of the game and revamping the story and gameplay to fit a more modern story. To implement these improvements, the game will make the jump to HTML5, which should definitely help give the game a face lift. Loads time will be reduced, graphics will be crisper, and other technical problems from the game should be wiped out.
Jagex is also seeking to bring about changes to the way the community affects the world of the game, making it so a player's actions could have significant impact on Gielinor. These decisions will most likely plan out as a series of community events, such as The Battle for Lumbridge. This world-shaping community event seeks to introduce to both veteran Runescape players and people new to the game how Runescape 3 differs from previous versions of the series. As IGN pointed out in their preview of the game:
"It'll be up to players to decide which gods win and lose the battle for familiar areas through things like world events, the first of which will occur when the game launches, with others following roughly every three months after."
This update does not mean that veteran players will lose out on their legacies, as Jagex has confirmed that old content will still be available and Runescape 3 will be backwards compatible with legacy browsers.
While much of the video game industry is focused on blockbuster triple A titles and console gaming, Runescape has managed to outlast many of the titles thanks to a dedicated community that has stuck with the game through its decade-plus reign as the king of browser-based games.
