E3 2013 was full of many memorable moments, from getting new information about the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 to announcements of new games such as Star Wars: Battlefront 3 and Titanfall--but one surprise candidate has one-upped all of those games and devices in the annual E3 Critics Awards.
The Oculus Rift, the virtual reality headset that has begun to gain traction with gamers after being funded through Kickstarter, was the winner for the Best Hardware/Peripheral award, over the Xbox One and PlayStation 4.
The awards, voted on by 30 North American media outlets, chose the dark horse to beat out the next-gen consoles that have gotten most of the attention of gamers everywhere. Sony and Microsoft may be disappointed to find that their giant press conferences were unable to sway the media enough to beat the first public demonstration of the Oculus Rift in full 1080p.
The game that critics chose the pile awards on during E3 was Titanfall, scoring six awards overall, including Best of Show, Best Original, and Best Console Game of the three day event. Respawn must be pleased, as the multiplayer-only title is expected to do big business on the Xbox One and PC, and figures to convince gamers that they do not need a single player campaign to experience an epic story.
Gamestop has a full list of winners from the awards. Other games that won in their respective categories include Watch Dogs for Best Action/Adventure Game, NHL 14 for Best Sports Game (ironic considering the amount of attention EA heaped on their other sports titles. and not their hockey game), and Total War: Rome 2 for Best Strategy Game.
Keep in mind that many of the games that won awards won based solely on their E3 Presentations, and may not be indicative of future success or quality. Though Titanfall may be getting awarded, the game still has many months before the game is launched, so things may change for Respawn's futuristic mech game.
