Fans of the Plants vs. Zombies franchise were dealt a blow when it was announced that the upcoming sequel to the popular game has been delayed from release just a few shorts weeks before it was due to appear on iOS devices.

"Plants vs. Zombies 2: It's About Time" has been delayed until later in the summer, according to developer Popcap's official Twitter account:

"Plants vs. Zombies 2, originally slated for a July 18th release, will now be released later in the summer. Stay tuned for more details," the tweet read.

The free-to-play game was originally slated for a release sometime in the first half of 2013, but now it looks like the game will be missing that target as well as the July 18 date set by Popcap. Popcap gave no reason for the delay, nor have they indicated that the game would be appearing on other platforms like the original "Plants vs. Zombies," which appeared on pretty much every console available.

"Plants vs. Zombies 2: It's About Time"--which is turning out to be an appropriate title--will follow the same formula as the first game, with a twist that the game will take place in several time periods.

The game will travel from the Wild West to Ancient Egypt, and will feature new power-ups that will take advantage of Apple device's touch screens. Touch screens will also enable players to poke and jab at zombies themselves, which will be a huge advantage for players who had to stand silently as zombies destroyed their plant warriors.

Popcap has certainly been busy in the past few months. In addition to "Plants vs. Zombies 2," the company is developing "Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare" for the Xbox 360 and Xbox One. That game, which was revealed at E3 earlier this month, does not have a set release date either
