The Ouya, the little console that could, is now available for curious customers at retailers all over America and the rest of the world. The console, which was initially funded by one of the most successful Kickstarter campaigns in the website's history, is available not only in video game retailers such as Gamestop, but big chains such as Target and Best Buy. In addition, the device is available on Amazon.com in a variety of countries; however, the console has already sold out on the website. The console is also available at the Ouya official website.
Initially, the Ouya made waves when it was announced that the console would retail for only $99. The console includes a wireless controller (with a removable faceplate), extra batteries, a power adapter, and a HDMI cable. The console was initially set to appear earlier in the year, but demand caused the Ouya to be delayed until today.
Currently, the console has 173 games available to download for the console. All of these games are available to try for free, as developers must include free demos of every game on the Ouya. In addition, would-be developers can develop games for the console right on their own personal Ouya device. Big name developers who have games on the console include Square Enix, Double Fine, Airtight Games, Polygon, and Sega.
It will be interesting to see how well the Ouya can do, especially with the impending launch of the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One later this year. The Ouya drew up enough interest to gather $8.6 million during the initial Kickstarter campaign, so it appears as though there is enough of a market for the device to carve out a niche in the video game industry. Will Ouya become the next Steam? Or will it fade into obscurity? We will have to wait and see.
