Sony will again try to roll out firmware update 4.45 to the PlayStation 3, after a previous attempt caused some epic malfunctions to some PlayStation 3's. The new, hopefully error free, version of the update should be available June 27 according to Sony.
In a brief statement the company had this to say:
"We have identified the issue related to the PlayStation 3 software update (version 4.45) that impacted a small number of PS3 systems earlier this week. A new PS3 system software update is planned to be released on June 27 that resolves the issue. Thank you for your patience and understanding and we apologize for the inconvenience."
When firmware update 4.45 was initially released, it prevented some users from being able to access their cross media bar. Some users took it upon themselves to try and format their consoles so that the problems could be fixed. This just made things much, much worse, with some users reporting that attempts to fix the problems cause the PlayStation 3 to brick, leaving their PlayStation 3's unable to reboot. Needless to say, if your PlayStation 3 is one of those affected by the problem, leave it be until the revamped update is launched.
It will be interesting to see how well the new firmware update is able to resolve the issue, and if Sony can get the update right this time around. Obviously something catastrophic went down in the firmware's previous version, and if it caused an error as big as preventing users from using the cross media bar, then the company was able to identify and fix the problem.
Sony has a lot on their plate right now after a successful E3 press conference and getting their PlayStation 4 ready for launch sometime later this year. They cannot afford any major screw ups at this point, so hopefully they are able to nip this problem in the bud.
