Microsoft and 343 Industries made a splash at E3 this year when a new Halo title was announced for release sometime next year. However, during E3 it was never confirmed that the footage shown was from Halo 5, leaving some fans to speculate that the footage from the game was for a different entry into the series, such as Halo Reach or ODST. Phil Spencer, speaking to Gamespot, had a few words to say about the game and the mystery surrounding the title.
"It is the next Halo game that we are working on. We will talk more about actually the story arc in the game and how it plays out; we've got more time to talk about that...But having [producer Bonnie Ross] come out and announce the game, making sure people know it's a legitimate version of Halo coming out, and when it's coming out, and features that they're focused on we thought was...important."
It sounds like the trailer was indeed a teaser for a new full entry in the series. In addition, one of Xbox's higher ups, Don Mattrick also let slip that the Halo game shown at E3 was Halo 5.
It was previously reported that 343 Industries were working on a trilogy of Halo titles, so one would have to assume that Halo 5 would be next. After all, it would be rather awkward starting a brand new story for Master Chief, only to go out and start a side story or prequel after only one game in the story arc.
In any case, the Xbox One would benefit tremendously from having a Halo title available closer to the beginning of the launch window of the system. We will find out more about the upcoming Halo title as more details emerge.
