Olympic diving legend Greg Louganis announced on Monday his engagement to partner Johnny Chaillot. Their wedding is scheduled to take place this fall.
Louganis, who became the first male to win the springboard and platform gold in two consecutive Olympic Games, made an announcement about his status in an exclusive report to People Magazine.
"I finally met my soul mate - the more I fall in love with Johnny, the more I fall in love with myself. This is what the universe had in store for both of us," said Louganis, who recently served as a coach on the celebrity-diving competition "Splash."
His engagement and upcoming wedding to 52-year old paralegal wasn't the first major announcement done by Louganis. In 1995, the diving superstar revealed his gay status and even revealed he was positive for HIV on the Oprah Winfrey Show.
In an interview with Logo Online's the Backlot last March, Louganis described his soon-to-be husband as his soul mate.
"When we first got together it was like, 'We look like brothers.' He has the same skin. The same skin tone, everything. I was like, 'This feels really narcissistic.' But I also realize the more I fall in love with him the more I fall in love with myself."
"I always grew up hearing, 'Oh, your soul mate this and that.' And I didn't think it existed. I'm having second thoughts about that."
Louganis captured five medals in three Olympics (1976 Montreal, 1984 Los Angeles, and 1988 Seoul) and nabbed five World Championship gold throughout his stellar diving career. With his contribution as a gay athlete, Louganis is selected in the first class of inductees to the Gay and Lesbian Sports Hall of Fame on August 2 in Chicago.
