With E3 behind us, we now have a pretty good look at the rest of 2013. With huge games from publishers like EA, Activision, and Ubisoft, as well as a next-gen console launch, it's a pretty safe bet to say that there is still plenty to look forward to this year.
Killer Instinct
After a long, long hiatus, Killer Instinct is returning to consoles. The game will strangely enough be a free-to-play title, debuting as an exclusive launch title for the Xbox One. The game will come included with one character, but if you want any of the others, you'll have to purchase them separately. It's a wonky system, but that hasn't stopped the series' passionate fan base from making this one of 2013's most anticipated releases.
Killzone: Shadow Fall
The Xbox has Halo, the PS3 had Killzone. If you're a fan of the latter, this upcoming installment is looking like the best one yet. Debuting as an exclusive launch title for the PlayStation 4, Sony seems intent on using it to make a statement on just how fantastic the new console's hardware is. There's no release date set yet, but as soon as we know when the PS4 will land, we'll know when Killzone will arrive.
Watch_Dogs
First unveiled almost exactly one year ago at E3 2012, Watch_Dogs has been a center of attention ever since. It didn't hurt that the game just had a hugely impressive showing at E3, with a gameplay demo that showed off the incredibly interactive open world design. Watch_Dogs is out on November 19, 2013 for the PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One, Wii U, and PC.
Titanfall
The minds behind Respawn Entertainment changed the online gaming landscape in 2007 with Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. Not content to rest on that accomplishment though, they're now turning their attention to what they hope will be the next FPS phenomenon. Titanfall combines fast paced multiplayer action with singleplayer-esque atmosphere and storytelling, and wraps that up in a nice, warm giant robot blanket.
The E3 gameplay demo was our first look at the game, and if it's any indicator, Respawn is definitely on the right track. Titanfall will be a Microsoft exclusive, launching on the Xbox One, Xbox 360, and PC as launch title exclusive.
Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag
The assassins are back, this time with 100% more pirate action. Edward Kenway, grandfather of Assassin Creed 3's Connor, will star as the game's central, Templar-killing protagonist. In addition to a brand new story set in the AC universe, the game will also feature a revamped multiplayer mode. It'll arrive on the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, Wii U, and PC on October 29, with next-gen releases on the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One to follow in early 2014.
Battlefield 4
EA blew a lot of minds with their Battlefield 4 multiplayer gameplay demo at this year's E3. Bringing 64 players to showcase a live, online match, the preview showed off some impressive destructible terrain, a huge number of different vehicles, as well as an awe-inspiring collapse of an entire building during the middle of a game. The game is out on October 29, 2013, although EA has not yet confirmed if next-gen versions will be arriving on the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 in time for those consoles' launches.
Call of Duty: Ghosts
There's not much more that needs to be said about the next Call of Duty. If you were going to buy it, you probably already have it pre-ordered, and even if you don't like the series, it's still going to be one of the biggest games of 2013. Ghosts will arrive on November 5, 2013 for the PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, Xbox One, Wii U, and PC.
Overall, if E3 proved anything, it's that both the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One have nearly identical launch lineups. Each has there own handful of exclusives, such as Titanfall on the Xbox and Killzone on the PS4, but overall, most of the big AAA titles will appear on both devices. This seems to further support the idea that unless you're a diehard fan, your next-gen console purchasing decision is likely going to be over which system has the better hardware and features.
