The Legend of Zelda is one of the most beloved franchises of all time, but that does not make it immune to changes. With the upcoming Zelda game in the works, producer Eiji Aonuma revealed that his team is exploring ways to help the series grow to suit the needs of a new generation of fans. One of those changes he and his team are considering is DLC, according to his interview with Nintendo Life:
"We're certainly looking at different ways to add on content that would enhance the experience for the user - maybe more places to explore or just to enrich the experience beyond what is on the disc...we also have to take into consideration that if we charge for this content then it needs to be worth it for the user...So it's certainly a balancing an act, but I can't say that it is something we're not considering."
This move certainly would be intriguing, considering that Nintendo has not shown in the past that they have much interest in adding DLC to their popular series. Adding bonus content to a quality Legend of Zelda title would certainly peak a lot of fan's interest, and help the Wii U grow into a better balanced console like Sony and Microsoft's current and upcoming consoles. Aonuma is well aware that, as one of the men in charge of The Legend of Zelda, he must move the game forward or risk adding to the Wii U's woes. As Aonuma states to Engadget:
"If we don't change we might die...We need to evolve. Things need to change. Things need to grow."
With this new untitled Zelda title, along with the Link to the Past sequel on the 3DS, and The Wind Waker HD Remake, Nintendo is committed to giving fans more Zelda titles in the future. We shall see if Nintendo and The Legend of Zelda can evolve to fit new game expectations or if they will retreat into their classic style and remain in the doldrums of gaming.
