The Xbox One has promised to change the way that gamers use their system, and to revamp the parts of the Microsoft traditional services. This includes changes to the achievement system, the popular system of awarding gamers points for completing certain tasks in a game. Microsoft has released a new notice about the achievement system, which includes information on their newest reward system: challenges.

Challenges do not affect a user's gamerscore, but are a separate entity entirely. They will be time-based, meaning challenges can only be completed during a set period of time, unlike achievements. Challenges can span multiple titles, and can be done by the game community as a whole. While challenges do not change a person's gamerscore, they do show up in their history, and can unlock a host of goodies if the player completes them. Unlockables can also be obtained with traditional achievements as well. As Major Nelson states in the briefing:

"In addition to Gamerscore, which will remain as a critical part of the Xbox gaming experience...consumers can now unlock digital artwork, new maps, unlockable characters, and temporary stat boosts via achievements. And this is not limited to games! Other Xbox One applications such as video and music apps can now use Achievements to bring you awesome sneak peek content, early access, or subscription extensions. Only games will give you Gamerscore."

In addition, achievements and challenges will be tied into the Xbox One's DVR, meaning gamers will be able to relive their triumphs over again and share them with people on their friends list. Achievements being worked on will also have their progress displayed on the dashboard, meaning there will no longer be any guessing towards how close a player is to completing an achievement.
