While owners of HTC's current flagship handset, the One, will undoubtedly be the first HTC handset to receive an Android 4.2.2 update, reports indicate that the older One X won't be too far behind. In fact, Android 4.2.2 could land on the One X as soon as July.
In a Twitter exchange, HTC ambassador to France Yves Wi and well-respected HTC modder and insider @LlabTooFeR had this to say:
@llabtoofer I think July... For One S no information for me and you ?
— Yves Wi (@Hawk1902) June 11, 2013
"@Hawk1902 HOX update should be near as well ;)," @LlabTooFeR said, referring to the imminent Android 4.2.2 patch for the newer HTC one.
"@LlabTooFeR I think July... For One S no information for me and you?" Wii tweeted in response.
Ignoring the bad news for One S owners, this is a good sign that HTC is working at keeping the One X relevant in 2013. Android 4.2.2 is the latest version of Android.
HTC is under intense pressure to step up its update game as it has lost sales to rival Samsung, who has been tenacious is keeping its handsets as updated as possible. Samsung's flagship, the Galaxy S4, runs Android 4.2.2, while HTC's current flagship, the One, still runs Android 4.1.2. An Android 4.2.2 update for the One is said to be near, but given the increasing difference in sales, many are criticizing HTC for being lax.
A July release date doesn't seem too farfetched, seeing as how the Galaxy S3 and Galaxy Note 2 were initially scheduled to receive their Android 4.2.2 updates in June. The Samsung update has been delayed, but given the developmental cycle, HTC shouldn't be too far behind, and a July rollout could be something to look forward.
The One X is also rumored to receive Android 4.3 later this year.
HTC has not confirmed the matter, other than Wi's comments.
