One of the biggest trends at this year's E3 was something that was not on most people's radar. It seems as though tablet connectivity with blockbuster games has become the newest fad in gaming today, as many upcoming games have been shown to have various levels on connection between the console version of the game and the tablet version. We look at the games that will be using this feature in the future.
The Division, the game that closed out Ubisoft's E3 conference, will allow some players to drop in on their friend's game using their tablet devices. They will appear as a small drone helicopter in the game, and can be used to scout locations and offer assistance to the other players. This includes highlighting enemies and providing elevated cover fire. Another Ubisoft game with tablet support is Watch Dogs, Players will be able to help others track targets and hack devices so that console players can have an easier go at missions. Ubisoft's other big new IP, The Crew, will let tablet players customize their cars while not playing the main game.
EA is also getting on the tablet connectivity wagon, as Battlefield 4's Commander Mode for multiplayer will be handled on a tablet. Commanders can give orders and call in heavy ordnance for the players in the field. Need For Speed: Rivals will have players take control of a helicopter that can assist players during their races or chases.
Microsoft has stated that many of their games will have connectivity with Smartglass, and the tablet can be used in a similar capacity as the Wii U gamepad and the PlayStation Vita. It will be interesting to see how popular this feature becomes with fans, as it is clear that many publishers and developers are on board with this technology. Will this be a passing fad, or are tablet crossover games here to stay? It will be up to gamers to decide.
