Owners of the original Samsung flagship that kickstarted it all, the Galaxy S2, on AT&T's network can finally grab themselves a much-wanted piece of software: Android 4.1 Jelly Bean.
The Android update can be downloaded via Samsung's KIES software. There are no reports of the upgrade rolling out over the air, and in fact, there is no announcement from AT&T about the update at all, but users have reported it is available through KIES.
The update, which will bump the Galaxy S2 up from Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich to Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, will be a welcome improvement for Galaxy S2 users. Android 4.1 Jelly Bean not only comes with a new interface, but Project Butter as well, which is a series of system enhancements designed to improve the performance and smoothness of the Android experience. Jelly Bean will also give AT&T Galaxy S2 users Google Now, a personal assistant that Google claims can display relevant information before it is even asked.
Android 4.1 Jelly Bean shouldn't be the last upgrade the Galaxy S2 will receive, although it's close. An earlier report from reliable Samsung-centric website SamMobile stated that Samsung would support the Galaxy S2 through Android 4.2.2, and then cease providing any more firmwares. Android 4.2.2 is the operating system currently on the Galaxy S4, and Samsung aims to roll out the Android version to many of its popular handsets over the coming months. The Galaxy S3 and Galaxy Note 2 are reported to receive it in June, with the Galaxy S2 and Galaxy Note versions coming out some time after.
