With the final weekend before Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) approaching, data from U.S. and Canada show Apple's latest iOS is running on roughly 93 percent of North American iPhones.

Chitika Insight's report, "Before WWDC, iOS 6 Dominates iPhone and iPad," collected and analyzed "millions of online ad impressions" between May 21 and May 28. With the report, Chitika showed 92.7 percent of iPhones had iOS 6 installed. With 5.5 percent, iOS 5 placed second, easily ahead of iOS 4's 1.7 percent.

The iOS figures shift slightly when it comes to the iPad, however, iOS 6 still remains on top. The latest Apple mobile operating system accounted for 82.9 percent among the Cupertino-based organization's tablets, 69.5 percent ahead of its predecessor. The iOS 5 is utilized more on iPads than on iPhones as it attracted 13.4 percent. Rounding the top three, iOS 4 achieved 3.8 percent.

"Overall, iPhone users are more likely to have updated to iOS 6 as compared
to iPad users, with most of the difference being that a significantly higher percentage of iPad users are still running version 5," noted Chitika's report. "A possible reason for this difference may be that many of the most noteworthy new features in iOS 6 were geared more towards mobile usage (e.g. Facetime over mobile networks, turn-by-turn GPS)."

Another reason as to why iOS 6 is installed on more iPhones than iPads is due to most tablets being Wi-Fi-enabled.

"Regardless of the reason for the disparity, the data bolsters the idea that iPhone users tend to be serial updaters," concluded Chitika.
