Samsung Galaxy Note 2 owners on T-Mobile's network have received another treat from the carrier this week. Beginning on June 3, Magenta began rolling out an update containing some security fixes and a Samsung software known as "Smart Switch."
The update only weighs a mere 15MB, so it's a fairly painless download. The Galaxy Note 2 will still run Android 4.1.2 since the upgrade doesn't introduce a new version of Android, just some fixes and a new app to play with.
"Beginning June 3, the Samsung Galaxy Note II will have a software update to Android version 4.1.2/ Software T889UVBMD1 via Over The Air (OTA) and Samsung Kies. This update improves security and includes Smart switch," T-Mobile wrote in its support documents.
Samsung's Smart Switch software is simply an app for users to transfer their data over to a new Samsung smartphone.
"Other content transfer tools are time consuming. Smart Switch offers a simple, do-it-yourself migration tool that you can install at home. With Smart Switch, you can transfer your personal data, media and apps with one service, without having to use multiple tools," Samsung describes on its Smart Switch webpage.
While it's not much, Galaxy Note 2 owners still have something to look forward to in the coming months: Android 4.2.2. Samsung is reportedly gearing up to release Android 4.2.2 for the Galaxy S3 and Galaxy Note 2 smartphones sometime in June. Samsung hasn't officially confirmed the matter, but a leaked Galaxy S3 Android 4.2.2 build showed that the South Korean electronics manufacturer is coming close to putting the finishing touches on the upgrade. Carrier-tied Galaxy Note 2s here in the United States, sadly, will have to wait much longer as the update will have to pass through the network for certification and bloatware.
