The veil has finally been lifted on the The Last of Us' multiplayer, and rather than providing a tacked-on generic deathmatch mode, Naughty Dog has promised an "extension of the themes" in the single-player campaign. While the developer is known for its white knuckle solo experiences, the team cut their teeth with Uncharted 2's multiplayer and has since honed their craft in Nathan Drake's threequel.
Sony's official blog reports that The Last of Us' Factions mode will ask players to choose between either the Hunters or the Fireflies clans and offer two game types: Supply Raid, and Survivors. Survivors features permadeath and does away with respawns, ratcheting up the tension and encouraging a slower pace to the gameplay. The first team to win the best of seven rounds takes the crown. Supply Raid asks players to scour the arena for resources and provides twenty communal respawns. Sudden death is initiated when respawns run out.
"The core gameplay is very tactical, featuring the same crafting system found in the single player experience," reads the post. "Stealthy players can do well by using Listen Mode to locate enemies and flank them with silenced weapons."'
The blog adds, "Teamwork is essential - fallen teammates can crawl to their allies and be revived, so players who stick together will excel. Melee combat is a brutal affair, and after downing a player you have the choice of performing an execution move. There are many more layers to explore, from the robust loadout system to the in-game economy."
In an accompanying video, the ability to craft and upgrade weapons mid-game is showcased. The trailer asks, "Can you survive 12 weeks?"
