It's been a monumental week for Apple's iPod business. According to the latest report, a record number of units were sold.
The iPod touch, which launched in September 2007, has hit the milestone of selling its 100 millionth unit. According to The Loop Insight, Apple made the confirmation on Thursday.
Apple does not normally disclose sales numbers, but the company did say last year that the iPod touch sold 46.5 million units in the U.S. alone, a revelation provided in court documents for the patent infringement trial against Samsung Electronics Co. Of the 46.5 million units, the documents showed 2010 to be the iPod touch's best year, selling 13 million units.
The iPod touch is currently in its fifth-generation model as of October 2013 when it launched alongside the iPad mini.
The news coincidentally comes as Apple launched a new model of the iPod touch 5G. The fifth-generation iPod touch has been available in 32GB and 64GB models, but they are now joined with a 16GB variant. One notable difference with the 16GB iPod touch, however, is the lack of a rear-facing iSight camera.
The 16GB model is on sale for $229, a change from the standard 32GB and 64GB also available on Apple.com for $299 and $399, respectively. In addition, unlike the 32GB and 64GB models, the 16GB iPod touch is only available in black and silver color options. The 32GB and 64GB iPod touch, however, are also available in blue, pink, red and yellow.
