The price of a console is often critical to its success at launch and beyond, as gamers try to figure out the most bang for the buck that they will get for a new system. And this will likely continue to be a huge factor when the Xbox One launches later this year.
Colin Sebastian, an analyst for Robert W. Baird, said that pricing for the new system will be key in an note to investors this week that was reported by Gamespot.
It is currently unknown how much the Xbox One or the PlayStation 4 will cost when they are launched, but it is expected that the consoles will cost less than the previous consoles for both Microsoft and Sony were during their respective releases.
One possibility that would affect the Xbox One's price is if the console gets subsidized through partnerships between Microsoft and other media companies. It has been rumored off and on about a subsidized Xbox One model, and Sebastian believes that we could very well see one at launch. One possible partner for a subsidized Xbox One would be Comcast, which was named specifically during the Xbox One Reveal event presentation for streaming live TV on the console.
Currently a subsidized Xbox 360 is available, where gamers pay $99 for the system and commit to a two year subscription to Xbox Live Gold for $15 a month. It is unclear how much a subsidized Xbox One would cost, but earlier rumors put it around $300 for the console and a monthly fee, as well as a $500 stand-alone console being available for those who do not want to deal with monthly charges.
In any case, nothing is official until Microsoft makes any more announcements about their newest console. Gamers should look to E3 as the next big dumping ground for information concerning the next-gen console.
