The 2014 Mercedes-Benz S-Class offers plenty of high-tech features for consumers who want both luxury and convenience.
"This full-size luxury sedan, which hits showrooms in September, is absolutely bristling with technology: 3D cameras, radar, night vision, LED headlights and taillights that adjust their brightness automatically," writes Matthew de Paula at Forbes.
Perhaps the most exciting tech is now automatic. "The 2014 S-Class brings us one step closer to automated driving. It has cameras that act as eyes and radar sensors that act as ears, for a 360-degree view of the road," de Paula adds. "It knows when cars are approaching too quickly in adjacent lanes and can warn the driver. It knows when a rear-end collision is imminent and can hit the brakes and activate hazard lights to mitigate injury. It can drive itself in gridlock. It can steer out of danger if the driver is too drowsy to stay in the lane."
SlashGear is a bit more overwhelmed by all the cutting-edge (perhaps over the edge, in some cases) options. "It's a cacophony of brand new tech, luxury fittings, more intelligent driving-aids than just about anything else on the road, and even a nod to fuel-efficiency and the environment. Set to hit dealers in September, the well-appointed four door is the first car not to feature a single traditional light bulb -- everything is lit up by nearly 500 LEDs -- and can even squirt non-lingering perfume through the cabin to "individualize the smell of the interior," writes Chris Davies.
The interior of the new S-Class reflects popular mobile tech. "The automaker did away with all analog gauges, instead replacing the instrument panel with a 12.3-inch digital screen. It displays the typical information you'd find on every instrument panel: speedometer, tachometer, trip computer, navigation directions, etc.," writes David Undercoffler at the Los Angeles Times. "A second screen of equal size sits to the right of the first, at the center of the dashboard. It functions like many screens on modern luxury cars, displaying the vehicle's infotainment, full navigation system and climate control."
But firsthand experience with the S-Class is still elusive; for now, the spec sheet will have to suffice.
