EA recently obtained the rights to make Star Wars games, and now they have opened an offshoot of Battlefield Developer DICE in Las Angeles to create the next generation of Star Wars games. EA announced the news in The Wall Street Journal. The studio will create original games along with Star Wars titles, according to Karl-Magnus Troedsson, the head of DICE, which is located in Sweden.
Troedsson is excited about the expansion of DICE, and is ready to see what creations the new studio will come up with.
"There is an extreme talent pool over there that we want a part of...It's no secret that our main competitor is there."
He is referring to Infinity Ward and Treyarch, who create the Call of Duty series for Activision, and serve as the other half of one of the biggest rivalries in video games. Troedsson is hopeful that some of the employees from the two developers can be convinced to switch sides and join the L.A. branch of DICE.
The new studio will have about 60 employees, and already some of EA's local talent have come over to fill positions within the company. Danger Close, who work on the Medal of Honor series, is also located in Los Angeles, and will be contributing talent to the new studio. Many employees working for DICE may transfer to the California studio for the chance to work on new Star Wars games, as Troedsson reports that people were ecstatic when the news broke that DICE would handle the Star Wars franchise.
"People stood up and cheered, when I announced that we were working on Star Wars,"
While no new Star Wars games have been announced, the team at DICE are known for quality work, especially on the Battlefield series, so any upcoming titles from the new studio should be top notch.
