There's still hope for the HTC One on Verizon. Maybe.

Previously, Verizon sent out invitations for a big announcement May 22 at the CTIA 2013 trade show in Las Vegas.

First, analysts thought Verizon would be unveiling the release date for the Samsung Galaxy S4, but then Verizon did that (as of now, it's still May 30), yet the May 22 announcement is still pending.

Next rumors said it could be the Nokia Lumia 928, but Verizon announced that phone yesterday (it's coming May 16). Still, the May 22 announcement is on.

So what can it be? What does Verizon still have up its sleeve that will be ready to unveil in only a week and a half?

Well, there's always the HTC One. Verizon and HTC have both been coy about whether the new phone will show up on the largest carrier in the United States. HTC initially announced on Twitter that it would not, but that tweet was quietly deleted without fanfare once news organizations began to pick it up.

Since then, both companies have refused to confirm or deny rumors of the One debuting on Big Red, a tactic that would be consistent with a big announcement. Of course, it would also be consistent with a release that is never coming.

There's no incentive to announce that a phone isn't coming. That only invites negative publicity, perhaps sparking a backlash from loyalists who've held off on buying a phone from a competitor. We'll see in a few weeks.

The HTC One features a 1.7GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 600 processor, 2GB of RAM, a 4.7-inch 1920x1080 pixel widescreen Super LCD 3 display, a 2300 mAh Li-Po battery, a 4-megapixel "Ultrapixel" camera with enhanced low-light sensitivity with 1080p HD video, up to 64GB of internal storage and runs Android 4.1.2.
