Defiance returns this week with "A Well Respected Man." The episode opens with Nolan and his lawkeepers laying down some justice on two Castithan weapons smugglers.

Nolan is obviously still peeved about Datak Tarr leaving a dead man on the lawkeepers' doorstep, and he's taking out his frustration by busting up Tarr's criminal rings. Unfortunately, it turns out Tarr's men were working under town council orders, with Rafe and Tarr buying up weapons under the table in order to improve the town's armory.

As the temporary Mayor, Amanda had no idea about this, and is none to pleased to have been left out of the loop. Rafe tells her not to subtly that she needs to start playing ball if she's going to have a shot at getting reelected soon. Amanda heads off to confront her overzealous lawman Nolan, who is currently enjoying the company of Kenya at her brothel.

On her way there, Amanda is confronted by a woman who says that Kenya is destroying her family, by tempting her husband with alcohol and sex. When some unkind words come up, Amanda slaps the woman, in full view of a group of children, and walks away very flustered. It seems this sisterly relationship is a bit complicated.

Amanda bursts in on Kenya and Nolan (luckily for her, after their business was done), and gets into an argument with her sex worker sister. Kenya has her own issues though, as it seems one of her girls has been stealing from customers. As Kenya goes to confront her, she flees the scene. Kenya secretly follows her to a drug deal in progress (or would be drug deal, if the dealer had any inventory left). The girl, Tirra, is an addict apparently, and her supplier to none other than Tarr's bio-man. Kenya moves to drag Tirra back to the brothel, but not before they both inadvertently see that the bio-man had been smuggling a group of human prisoners.

Having seen too much, the pair of them are knocked unconscious and added to the human truckload.

Once Nolan and Amanda realize that Kenya is missing, they head out on the hunt. They try to recruit Datak Tarr's help, only to be rebuffed after Nolan roughs him up a bit. Tarr really values respect, and Nolan doesn't have much on hand.

Stahma, Tarr's wife, goes to talk to Amanda afterwards, telling her that she and Kenya are friends. She says that if they want Tarr's help, they need to convince him that he's respected. How will they do that? By offering him the vacant council seat. Sounds like trouble to me, but Amanda eventually agrees to do it.

Kenya and Tirra meanwhile find themselves in a drug lab of sort. The kicker is they're being harvested... for their adrenaline. They're put into a maze with a monstrous alien, and forced to flee or presumably be eaten. However, Kenya soon realizes that a necklace she gives to Tirra to keep her strong was actually lost in the truck. This is all a dream!

She wakes up strapped into a hallucination-causing machine, breaks out, and kills one of her captors; and with the help of Datak, Nolan and crew arrive in the knick of time to save her from the bio-man.

While much of this episode focused on the backstory and relationship between Kenya and Amanda, it ends with Nolan realizing that it's Stahma, not Datak, that he should be watching.

Rafe meanwhile reconciles with his surviving son Quentin, and the two of them discover some mysterious clues as to why Luke was killed.

Defiance returns next Monday with "The Serpent's Egg."
