A spiritual successor to the 2002 Gamecube game Eternal Darkness was teased earlier today with a debut trailer. The game is being developed by Precursor Games, a brand new studio comprised of many of the key members of Silicon Knights, the developers of the original game.

Additionally, Silicon Knights founder and president Denis Dyack has been attached to the project. The new game will be titled Shadow of the Eternals, and will be crowdfunded through Kickstarter. The Kickstarter campaign is set to go live on Monday.

The original Eternal Darkness was the Gamecube's first M rated game, and although it was not a commercial success, it achieved widespread critical acclaim, and has since developed a significant fan base.

Eternal Darkness follows a woman investigating the murder of her grandfather. At his mansion, she discovers a secret room containing a book made out of human skin and bone.

The game is best known for its "Sanity Meter," which tracked the character's state of mind. When the bar became low, the game would begin to mess with the actual player. Effects of this would include skewed camera angles, ghostly noises, illogical geometry (such as finding yourself walking on the ceiling of a room) and fourth wall breaking instances such as the appearance that the TV has shut off or the console has "blue screened."

A sequel has been in the works for almost seven years now. However, legal troubles with Epic Games led to the cancellation of an official sequel. Shadow of the Eternals will instead be a "spiritual successor," looking to capture the elements and tone of the original game.

So far, not much more has been revealed, but we should learn a lot more when the Kickstarter page goes live on Monday. Until then, you can check out more information at the official webpage here.
