Splinter Cell: Blacklist is one of the most hotly anticipated games for current generation of consoles, and so far looks like it could be one of the best games in the series. With multiple possible play styles available, the single player campaign sets out to appeal to both stealth fans and action fans. However, many were wondering about if the game would have any form of multiplayer. Well now, a video from IGN has uncovered the truth: Blacklist will host the return of the Spies vs Mercs mode.

For those unfamiliar with Spies vs Mercs (possibly due to its absence from Splinter Cell: Conviction), the mode pairs teams of spies against teams of mercs in a game of cat and mouse. Spies must hack select computer terminals, while mercs patrol the perimeter to prevent data from being stolen.

In pursuit of Blacklist's goal to give players the choice between stealth or action, the two different teams play very differently. Spies are able to use stealth to their advantage, and use silent takedowns. Mercs, on the other hand, are armored and can dish out more punishment in a firefight. Players can decide which kind of play fits them best when choosing what team to be on.

Blacklist will have four vs four for the multiplayer mode, a first for the series. Previous version of Spies vs Mercs had two on two or three on three battles, so Blacklist will have more action and chaos than any other game in the series. Ubisoft did not mention if other multiplayer modes will be in the game.

Splinter Cell: Blacklist is being developed by Ubisoft, and will be available on August 20 for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, Wii U, and PC. The game may also make an appearance on next-gen consoles at some point, though nothing has been confirmed by Ubisoft.
