Fans of the football franchise Madden NFL Football may be disappointed to discover that the latest entry in the series, which has appeared on Nintendo platforms since 1991, will not launch on the Wii U. The popular football series is currently the only video game series that holds the NFL license. As the series celebrates its 25th anniversary, it seems that Wii U fans will be left out of the party. A spokesman for the Madden series confirmed this news to Nintendo World Report.

"We will not be releasing a Wii U version of Madden NFL in 2013...However, we have a strong partnership with Nintendo and will continue to evaluate opportunities for delivering additional Madden NFL products for Nintendo fans in the future."

While future Madden games may launch on the Wii U, it is unclear exactly why this year's game is being skipped. Last year's edition of the game shipped for both the Wii and Wii U, and the 3DS hosted the 2011 version of Madden as a launch title.

It will be a tough year for sports fans on the Wii U, as EA neglected to announce a 2014 edition of the FIFA franchise for the console. The Wii U's lack of sales, which are estimated at under half a million units during the beginning of 2013, may be the root of the publisher's decision to skip the system this year. Others may blame the Wii U's reputation  as a weak piece of hardware for its lack of software. In any case, hopefully Nintendo and EA will figure out a deal to bring the Madden franchise back to the Wii U sometime in the future.
