Microsoft is reportedly having issues developing games for their upcoming next-gen Xbox, according to a report from Kotaku. A source, speaking to the online publication under the condition of anonymity, has claimed that some next-gen Xbox titles are delayed up to six months, and that Microsoft is scrambling to catch up to Sony before both consoles launch sometime later this year.
"A reliable source...tells us that Microsoft is as much as six months behind in producing content for the new console, despite an expected late-2013 launch. Another tells us that Microsoft recently cancelled several internal next-gen projects because they were not coming together as hoped. These sources have told us that, comparatively, Sony is in better shape and further along with hardware and software development for PlayStation 4."
This may be a crushing blow to Microsoft if it is indeed true, as Microsoft does not have the size to compete with Sony and Nintendo, they if they are not prepared for the next-gen Xbox's launch, the whole console could be delayed as software developers catch up. Microsoft is trying to make up for this gap by signing more exclusive titles to the system, such as the recently leaked game by Respawn Entertainment, the studio founded by the creators of Call of Duty.
The next gen Xbox is to be announced on May 21, so we shall see if the console has many games announced as launch titles, or if they have few titles announced on that date, or at E3. While the console is still unannounced, it is hard to gauge how many titles to expect for the console, as game developers are reluctant to announces their multiplatform games for a system that Microsoft has not confirmed yet. We shall have to see if this news is valid, or Microsoft is more on the ball that this report indicates.
