A ten minute preview of Total War: Rome II has been released. The gameplay video showcases the Battle of Teutoburg, a historic ambush of the Roman army by the Germanic barbarians in 9 AD.
The preview shows off some of the new gameplay features, as well as the gorgeous new Warscape engine. The barbarians utilize rolling hay fireballs, archers, attack dogs, hit and run tactics, and brutal berserkers to get an edge over the better armed and organized Roman army, and it looks pretty fantastic. The developers had previously stated that this sequel would feature a staggering number of unique animations and visual styles for each of the soldiers, and it really shows, even in this early look.
The video also shows off the Tactical Map, a top down view that allows players to view the entire battlefield and issue strategic commands.
Give it a watch below, but keep in mind that the video is using pre-alpha gameplay, and is not fully representative of how the final game will look or play.
Total War: Rome II is the sequel to the 2004 game, Rome: Total War. It is the eighth standalone title in the Total War game series. It is being developed by Creative Assembly, and published by Sega.
The developers have stated that it will be a much more streamlined and intuitive gaming experience, making it easier for newer players to get into the series.
The game's campaign mode will feature 117 different factions, each with their own unique roster of units. Eight of these factions will be playable. They are divided into three general cultural groups: the Greco-Roman, Barbarian, and Eastern. The playable cultures will be the Roman Republic, Carthage, Macedon, Iceni, Arverni, Suebi, Pathia, and Egypt.
Total War: Rome II will be released in Q3 or Q4 of 2013 for the PC.
