The next Apple smartphone will experience an extended delivery delay, according to a research analyst.
Citigroup Capital Markets' Glen Yeung stated Apple will delay the iPhone 5S from June to July to approximately August or September.
According to Yeung, the next Apple smartphone will likely have volume production issues while also having an accelerated design phase.
The analyst further noted the iPhone 6 won't launch this year, but Apple will launch new devices at some point this year.
"[For the fourth quarter of 2013 (4Q13)]...we expect several product refreshes in 4Q13. Specifically, we expect iPhone 5S (better camera & processor, NFC, new colors), iPad Mini (Retina and non-Retina refresh), iPad 5 (slimmer, lighter, thinner bezel), MacBook Air Retina. We do NOT expect iPhone 6 (large screen) and remain unclear on low-end iPhone."
As for the iPad mini, however, Yeung stated some "concern" for the 7.9-inch tablet's demand. Ultimately, he believes there will be two models of the next iPad mini, one with and without Retina Display.
The note about the delay echoes KGI Securities analyst Ming-chi Kuo who also said developmental issues are reasons the iPhone 5S and the iPad mini 2 are experiencing delays. Although Apple has not confirmed any of the reports, Kuo added the iPhone 5S delay is because of Apple's decision to try and include a fingerprint sensor.
"Apple has to work out how to prevent interference from the black and white coating material under the cover glass," Kuo said. "Apple is the first to attempt this function and technology, and time is needed to find the right coating material, which will likely affect iPhone 5S shipments."
