While Pikmin fans have been waiting patiently for the release of the third game in the series, Nintendo has delayed the game frequently for unknown reasons. Pikmin 3 was supposed to be available during the Wii U's launch window, which ended in March, but so far the game has not had a release date. However, today Nintendo has announced that the game is indeed slated to appear on August 4.
Nintendo also announced that their will be a new type of Pikmin added to the game. These pink Pikmin have the unique ability to fly and carry objects, adding a new dimension to the game. These pink Pikmin have been long rumored to be part of the game, but it is only today that Nintendo has officially confirmed the new type's presence in the game. A rock type of Pikmin was announced earlier as another new type of Pikmin in the game. Nintendo also released what appears to be the final box art of the game, which can be seen here.
These new details are certainly welcome to fans of the series, who have been waiting since 2004's Pikmin 2 for another game in the series. During that time, Nintendo began developing the game for the original Wii in 2008, before Shigeru Miyamoto, the developer of Mario and The Legend of Zelda and Pikmin, decided to move the game to the Wii U instead.
While the August release date is not so far away, it is important to keep in mind that fans have been waiting since the Wii U came out for this game to appear, and even longer considering how long the game has been rumored to be in development. Hopefully Nintendo delivers Pikmin 3 on time and continues the series' strong gameplay and imaginative levels.
