Electronics manufacturer LG will hold an event in New York on May 1 that could be the American launch of the LG Optimus G Pro, the 5.5-inch smartphone/tablet hybrid device, according to new rumors.
Press invitations haven't gone out yet, and there's bee no word of any new devices that would warrant an event in the United States, so it seems likely the event will be LG's announcement of the official release date for the Optimus G Pro, which has sold well overseas.
If true, the timing is a gamble for LG. The Samsung Galaxy S4 hits the U.S. market at the same time, so LG would be putting its best phone up against Samsung's flagship in a head-to-head competition that LG can't win.
The Optimus G Pro is an impressive device, though its internal specs are a bit less powerful than those of the Galaxy S4. It makes up for that with a screen that's a full half-inch larger. While some might say the G Pro is a direct competitor to the Galaxy Note 2, Samsung's own 5.5-inch phone, the Optimus G Pro is more advanced.
Unveiling the G Pro next month means LG benefits from the increased traffic in mobile stores brought in by the Galaxy S4. But it also means many potential customers will likely be opting for the Galaxy S4 over LG's latest offering.
The LG Optimus G Pro features a 1.7GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 600 processor, 2 GB of RAM, a 5.5-inch Full-HD 1920x1080 IPS display with 440 ppi, a 13-megapixel camera with 1080p HD video, 32GB of internal storage, an SD card slot for up to 64GB more, a huge 3000 mAh Li-Po battery and runs Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean.
