Fans of the critically acclaimed Arkham series of Batman games will not have to wait for next-gen consoles to get another game in the series, as Warner Bros. announced today that Batman: Arkham Origins will be launched October 25 on the PC, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and Wii U.

As seen by the title, Origins will take place years before the events of the first game in the series, Batman: Arkham Asylum, and will feature eight assassins coming together on Christmas Eve to kill a younger Batman. This will allow Batman (and by extension, the player) to meet several of the comic's iconic characters for the first time. While the cast of characters is unknown, GameInformer's cover reveals that Deathstroke will make his series debut in the game.

The game will not be handled by previous developer Rocksteady, but instead will be developed by WB Games Montreal. Warner Bros. may alternate between the studios in the future, so that the games may become steady releases for the company. WB Games Montreal will use the customized Unreal Engine that Rocksteady had used for the previous two games in the series, so the transition between the two should hopefully be minimal.

In addition to Batman: Arkham Origins, Warner Bros announced a handheld spinoff for the series, entitled Batman: Arkham Origins Blackgate. Blackgate is the other prison in Gotham City in the Batman mythology. This game will come to the Nintendo 3DS and PlayStation Vita the same day as Batman: Arkham Origins. Blackgate will be a 2.5D game, in the same vein as Metroid and take place between the events of Origins and Arkham Asylum.

Details about the title's gameplay are still scant.
