The LG Optimus G Pro is now available in Japan, though in a smaller form factor than the popular 5.5-inch phablet size that's sold half a million devices in Korea. It's available from NTT DoCoMo, Japan's largest mobile carrier.
The Japanese version, which seems to have been made specifically for that market, has only a 5-inch display, though that's still larger than the screen on the iPhone 5, the HTC One or the BlackBerry Z10, and it's the same size as the Samsung Galaxy S4 and the Sony Xperia Z.
The Optimus G Pro is still slated for release on Sprint in the United States, though there's no word on any specific release date, just a vague "second quarter," which could mean anytime in April, May or June.
The Optimus G Pro is being positioned as a competitor to the Samsung Galaxy Note 2, the largest mainstream smartphone available in the United States, so it seems likely that Americans will get the original 5.5-inch display, since the Note 2 has a screen the same size.
Of course, the Optimus G Pro will need to get here soon, as rumors about the Galaxy Note 3 are already swirling, including word that it could have 5.9-inch screen.
However, both the G Pro and the Note 3 could be dwarfed by Samsung's rumored Mega line of smartphones, which could be as large as 6.3 inches when they hit sometime in the next few months.
The LG Optimus G Pro features a 1.7GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 600 processor, 2 GB of RAM, a 5.5-inch Full-HD 1920x1080 IPS display with 440 ppi, a 13-megapixel camera with 1080p HD video, 32GB of internal storage, an SD card slot for up to 64GB more, a huge 3000 mAh Li-Po battery and runs Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean.
