Samsung Galaxy S2 Jelly Bean Update: Alltel Releases Android 4.1.2, Must Be Downloaded Manually Via PC

Alltel is updating the Samsung Galaxy S2 with Android 4.1.2, a long-expected move that owners of the phone and provider have been clamoring for for quite some time. Now Galaxy S2 owners can be up to date with the some of the latest features that Android provides its users.

The carrier had previously been using the woefully outdated Android 2.3.6 operating system, below that of the Ice Cream Sandwich that most basic Android phones use now. The jump to Jelly Bean skips the Ice Cream Sandwich model entirely, and will be quite different from what Galaxy S2 users will be used to. Android 4.1.2 comes with Google Now, Project Butter, a new notification system, and general improvements both to the phone's performance and stability.

There is only one potential hitch for users of Alltel's Galaxy S2 model. The file for Android 4.1.2 is too large for the phone, and users will have to download the update on the PC instead of waiting for an update to appear over the air. This news comes off the heels of Sprint releasing their own update to Android 4.1.2 for the Epic 4G Touch, which is that carriers version of the Galaxy S2. Alltel customers must be happy with the news, as the version of Android that was on their Galaxy S2s was far behind the standard that most smartphone owners currently have. In fact, some phones and carriers are already starting to switch over to the very latest Android 4.2.2.
