Ubisoft, the creators of the Assassin's Creed, Splinter Cell, and other blockbuster titles, will be one of the first developers to have a game on the next-gen Xbox and the PlayStation 4. However, At least one executive from the company is not necessarily impressed with technology alone.
Jade Raymond, speaking to MCV, reveals her feelings about the next generation of consoles, states that she feels that bigger and better technology will not necessarily lead to better games. Rather, she feels that innovative ideas are more important than the specs of a console.
"As a gamer and developer I'm very excited about the promise of Next Gen. That being said, innovation is not necessarily driven by teraflops alone. In my opinion, many of the most exciting new concepts lately have been driven out of the indie scene and have come to life on less powerful platforms," Raymond said.
She also points out that games such as the upcoming Splinter Cell: Blacklist are going to remembered for their unique way of approaching their genres and gameplay, rather than how they stretch a consoles limits.
"With Splinter Cell Blacklist, not only do I think that the team is delivering the best stealth experience of this generation, I also think that we are delivering a completely new multiplayer experience. Hopefully unique gameplay is still something that can make a game stand out," she explained.
Raymond has a good point about technological innovations versus innovative ideas. While have more power and graphical options does help developers be able to implement new ideas and more advanced settings into games, new ways to approach gaming and genres help drive the industry forward just as much. While it may be strange to hear somebody from Ubisoft, the creators of several blockbuster franchises, come to this conclusion, it remains to be true nonetheless.
