The jailbreak era has come to an end.
Seven months following the launch of iOS 6, hacker group Evasi0n released a jailbreak for Apple's operating system. The jailbreak proved to be a success, as nearly seven million people downloaded the hack within its first four days online. But, alas, to some people's disappointment, Apple's latest iOS 6 update has stopped Evasi0n.
As Latinos Post reported, Apple launched iOS 6.1.3 this week. The disclosed purpose of the update was to fix a bug that previously allowed users to bypass the pass-code and access apps within the Apple device, and improve Japan's Apple Maps. Word has spread that the update also spells the end for jailbreaks. According to CNET, Apple succeeded.
The update further contained patches that Evasi0n utilized in order to perform the untethered jailbreak on their iOS devices. The iPhone 4S, iPhone 5, iPad Mini, and the iPod Touch 5G, will no longer be able to use Evasi0n's jailbreak if upgraded to iOS 6.1.3. Therefore, iOS 6.1.2 is, at the moment, the last Apple mobile platform to be hacked. It is important to note that, once upgraded to iOS 6.1.3, you cannot downgrade to previous iOS 6 platforms.
Evasi0n did prepare for this moment back when iOS 6.1.3 was in beta testing. Evasi0n's David Wang told Forbes in February that the then-beta update might signal the end of their hacking. He added he was still testing the patch if other vulnerabilities created by the jailbreak still function post-update.
"If one of the vulnerabilities doesn't work, evasi0n doesn't work," Wang said. "We could replace that part with a different vulnerability, but [Apple] will probably fix most if not all of the bugs we've used when 6.1.3 comes out."
