2K Games and Gearbox Software, the publisher and developer of Borderlands 2 respectively, have announced a partnership with the Academy of Arts University.

The project will allow students to collaborate on an animated short set in the universe of Borderlands. 2K and Gearbox will be providing resources for the project, and will provide some guidance along with the faculty of the university. Students from across all of the school's disciplines will be involved with the "Borderlands Cooperative" project, with the film set to be finished by the end of 2013.

The project will begin during the Academy of Art University's spring semester, with teams of students pitching ideas for Borderlands short stories. A panel of university faculty, as well as judges from 2K and Gearbox, will choose one to move forward on. Additionally, the team behind the winning idea will be able to interview for an internship at Gearbox.

"This partnership is a natural fit for 2K, Gearbox and the Academy of Art University," 2K senior vice president of marketing Sarah Anderson commented. "The Academy's mission is to prepare students for 21st century careers by providing real world experiences, and that's exactly what the Borderlands Cooperative is all about."

Gearbox president Randy Pitchford also revealed that his studio would be giving the Academy access to actual Borderlands assets. "We are thrilled that our Borderlands universe has inspired so much creativity," he said. "We are happy to offer the Academy of Art University access to our digital assets so that its students' creativity can be harnessed into positive career development efforts and, if we're lucky, the creation of some great content that every Borderlands fan can enjoy."

The Academy of Art University is a multi-discipline art and design school in San Francisco, California. It was established in 1929.
