People eager to try out the Oculus Rift Virtual reality headset will be disappointed to know that Doom 3: BFG Edition will no longer come free with the device at launch. Valve, however, has announced that Team Fortress 2 will get an update that will allow the use of the headset, Eurogamer reports.
The device was funded through a Kickstarter campaign, and those who donated to the project were promised a copy of Doom 3 as a gift. However, with the addition of Team Fortress 2, backers will now have a different blockbuster game to play when the first copies of the Oculus Rift come off the production lines in.
When asked about the decision to add virtual reality to Team Fortress 2, Joe Ludwig of the Team Fortress 2 team at Valve, said this about the experience:
"When we first played an early version of Virtual Reality mode in Team Fortress we were blown away by the immersion we experienced. VR is just getting started, but it is going to have a big impact on gaming. This update will let us share that experience with more of the Team Fortress community."
An update to Team Fortress 2 will be released later this week, with an in-game hat available to users. While the news about Doom 3 is surprising, Valve's commitment to the Oculus Rift is not, considering the company is set to deliver a presentation at the Game Developer's Conference considering porting Team Fortress 2 to virtual reality. It remains to be seen if Oculus Rift is able to continue its success after a smashing Kickstarter campaign, or if it becomes just another short-lived novelty. With so many new consoles and innovations coming this year, which one do you think will steal consumers' hearts and wallets?
