Three weeks after the Academy Awards, Cinematographer Christopher Doyle spoke out against "Life of Pi" for winning Best Cinematography at the Oscars.
Known for his work on Wong Kar-Wai's films, Doyle called Claudio Miranda's photography ""a [expletive] insult to cinematography." In an interview with the Hufftingon Post the cinematographer stated "I'm sure he's a wonderful guy and I'm sure he cares so much, but since 97 percent of the film is not under his control, what the [expletive] are you talking about cinematography and I'm sorry. I have to be blunt and I don't care, you can write it." He also took the time to insult the Academy of Motion Picture and Arts and Sciences stating "No it's not a strange choice if you understand how [expletive] up people are and how lost they are, You bail out your bankers, support your rich people, you say Spielberg and Tarantino are the gods of cinema. Hey, good luck."
Miranda responded back to the insults stating "I'm sorry he feels that way."
Miranda beat out Janusz Kaminski ("Lincoln"), Robert Richardson ("Django Unchained"), Roger Deakins ("Skyfall") and Seamus McGarvey ("Anna Karenina") for the Oscar.
Doyle's last Hollywood film was in 2006 when he worked on M. Night Shymalan's "Lady in the Water." Recently he served as cinematographer in the Sundance hit "Magic Magic" and on "Tormented" in Japan.
Miranda was nominated for his first Academy Award in 2008 for "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button" and then won for "Pi" He also worked on "Tron: Legacy" and the upcoming Tom Cruise starrer "Oblivion."
As of the late the Academy Awards have recognized big budget blockbusters in the Cinematographer category. "Hugo," "Inception" and "Avatar" won the last three with "Pi" this year.
The 2014 Academy Awards have not been scheduled yet but will soon announce their date.
