The Best Original Screenplay is made up of four Best Picture nominees and one film that is only nominated for three major categories. Throughout the precursor awards one film has dominated the category and is likely to win the award very easily. Previous winners include "Django Unchained," "Midnight in Paris," "The King's Speech," and "The Hurt Locker."
The Best Foreign Language Film category has four countries that have previously been nominated and one that received its first nomination. This year the category seems to be predictable but anything goes especially when no film dominated the precursor awards and the Academy decided to nominated obscure films over the more obvious choices. Past winners in include Austria's "Amour," Iran's "A Separation," and Denmark's "In a Better Life."
The award for Best Director is one of the most head turning categories of the year. The winner of the accolade usually indicates what film will end up winning the Oscar. However this year, it seems unpredictable and many pundits are predicting that the Academy will split the Bets Picture and Best Director award.
American Society of Cinematographers have announced the nominees for Best Cinematography.
The North Texas Film Critics have selected "Gravity" as the Best Film of the Year.
