Disney Infinity has been delayed by Disney Interactive, so that the game can be further improved and tweaked before release, according to an article in the New York Times.

The game was originally slated for a June release, so that it would coincide with the release of Monsters University in theaters. Instead, the game will now be available in North America August 18 and in Europe two days later.

Disney Infinity is the company's new video game/toy line project, similar to the Skylanders brand created by Activision/Blizzard. Skylanders have generated sales of over 100 million toys and one billion dollars in overall sales. Obviously, with the cornucopia of characters Disney has to work with, the company wants to get into a similar line of products.

Disney has chosen to delay so that the product will stand out better, explains Disney Interactive co-president John Pleasants.

"We could deliver in June if we wanted to. Will a two-month timing change help us? Sure, of course. It gives us a little more time to add bells and whistles and make sure it really sings and pops."

It is unusual for a company to delay a game to add more flair to the finished product, as opposed to having the game need extra work to fix glitches and bugs. The June release date seemed important, as it tied with Monsters University and gave the game a chance to establish itself before the next line of Skylanders come out. Apparently, the brass at Disney Interactive decided that the two months were a necessary delay. hopefully the extra "bells and whistles" are worth it for the company.

Disney Infinity will be released on the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PC, Wii, Wii U, and 3DS.
