An anonymous source within Maxis claims that Simcity does not need to have an always-on connection to the game's servers in order to function properly.
Speaking to Rock Paper Shotgun about the controversial game, the source debunks the notion that the game needs to be connect to the Simcity servers in order to work.
"The servers are not handling any of the computation done to simulate the city you are playing...They are still acting as servers, doing some amount of computation to route messages of various types between both players and cities. As well, they're doing cloud storage of save games, interfacing with Origin, and all of that. But for the game itself? No, they're not doing anything. I have no idea why they're claiming otherwise."
This source also mentioned that what information the servers have to handle takes several minutes to be processed and sent back to the player.
"This is why they disabled Cheetah mode...to reduce by half the number of updates coming into the queue..."
This flies directly against what Maxis and EA have been saying about the game. For example, in a recent interview with Polygon, Maxis GM Lucy Bradshaw claimed connecting to the game servers is necessary to play the game.
"We offload a significant amount of the calculations to our servers so that the computations are off the local PCs and are moved into the cloud."
With Simcity mired in so many problems related to its internet connection, one has to wonder if Maxis would indeed go ahead and modify the game to include an offline mode. The game has already reached meme-level infamy for the problems it's had since launch, so something needs to be done to improve the game. Otherwise the game and Maxis could become an even bigger joke than they already are.
