New inside information says the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 could feature an LCD display, not a Super AMOLED display like its predecessor the Galaxy Note 2.
The Note II is Samsung's 5.55-inch smartphone/tablet hybrid that comes equipped with a stylus called the S Pen.
The S Pen may be the reason for the purported screen change. A report from SamMobile says a Samsung insider says LCD displays respond better to the S Pen than AMOLED displays. Samsung's recent investment in LCD panel manufacturing capabilities from electronics company Sharp could be a bid for more vertical integration in the Galaxy Note III production process.
LCD displays from Sharp have also been rumored as contenders for the iPhone and iPad, though nothing's official yet.
AMOLED purists need not fret. "It might not offer quite the same dynamic color range, deep blacks and vibrancy as an AMOLED panel, but it's close enough that those using LCD-based devices these days have no qualms," writes Phandroid.
And the change won't affect the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S IV, the company's much-anticipated flagship phone due to be unveiled in a huge launch event in New York's Times Square on Thursday.
"In fact, the Samsung Galaxy S4 is said to be using an AMOLED panel that is 25% more efficient than the one used on the predecessor, something that should do wonders for battery life," says Phandroid.
The Galaxy Note III is still a long way off and won't be released until later this year. But rumors indicate it may have a 5.8-inch or 6.3-inch screen with an eight-core Exynos 5 Octa processor.
