The next generation Zelda could still be a long while away from its release.
In an interview with Time Nintendo legend Shigeru Miyamoto spoke about the process of making games for the Wii U and the continual search to further the console's potential.
"If you look back at the launch of Wii, we were able to prepare a game like Wii Sports, which at the time was clearly a new game, and launch that alongside a Zelda game. With the Wii U, we took a similar approach by launching Nintendo Land as well as a Mario game - though we're working on Zelda for Wii U, that's going to take us a little big longer," Miyamoto said.
He added that the company was still working hard to implement new ways to improve upon the experience of the Wii U.
"We still have new things to learn about how to leverage the features and functionalities of Wii U in ways that create fun and interesting new ways to play, including new gameplay systems," Miyamoto stated. "As we become even more familiar with the hardware, we'll be able to do more from a software standpoint. That's an area we're currently devoting resources to."
Delays with major titles in the Zelda franchise are not new to Nintendo. The company delayed "Twilight Princess" for over three years and wound up releasing the title at the Nintendo Wii's launch. During an interview with MTV, Miyamoto commented on why some Zelda titles take so long to complete.
"Probably the thing we struggle most with when we're developing each game is what style Link is going to appear in. I think being able to showcase that and also the timeline itself - certainly the stories of each individual game are important but Zelda is also the series where we've paid the most attention to how the games piece together in that timeline. So being able to share that was great," he noted.
While Nintendo finishes up the next-gen Zelda, the company is preparing a remake of the 2002 classic "The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker." That game is due out later in the year for the Wii U.
