A small, unassuming patch was quietly released for Team Fortress 2 earlier today. The new fix has not only added a few crafting recipes and bug fixes, it also has improved performance on Linux systems.
You may remember that a few weeks ago, Valve ported the game over to Linux clients, and even included an adorable promotional item as incentive to try it out on the platform. While myself and many others had a pretty rough time trying to get TF2 to work on the recommended Ubuntu OS, Valve is committed to making the Linux experience the definitive one. The latest update will hopefully result in increased performance and improved stability, both of which many have found lacking so far.
Additionally, the patch has also added crafting blueprints for the Demoman's Sticky Jumper, which will cost reclaimed metal and three Ullapool Cabers, as well as the Soldier's Rocket Jumper, which will use up reclaimed metal and three Mantreads.
Lastly, the patch will be adding promotional weapons for pre-orders of the recently released Tomb Raider game. They include the Scout's Tomb Wrapper, a blood stained pick axe, and a badge that all classes can wear. All of these items are currently in the Genuine quality.
It's interesting that Valve is continuing to pursue the Linux port, even after the less than ecstatic reception it got upon its release. Still, Gabe Newell has made his thoughts on Linux vs Windows 8 very clear, so this may be the start of some very longterm plans for Valve to slowly start moving out of Microsoft's environment.
