With the news that the PlayStation 4 may have multi-tiered subscription plans like a cable company, many were wondering what would happen to PlayStation Plus. Well it appears that the subscription service will not shut down after the release of the new console, Sony Computer Entertainment president and CEO Jim Ryan has informed the PlayStation Blog.
"We definitely see that (PlayStation Plus) as a core part of the way forward. We're not yet in a position to disclose our plans for the future of PlayStation Plus but there will definitely be a prominent role to play for it in the PlayStation 4 landscape."
PlayStation Plus currently costs 50 Dollars per year, and offers subscribers free games for a certain amount of time, access to exclusive demos, and discounts on games in the PlayStation Store. It would make sense to continue the service, and it could very well continue on as a tier in Sony's attempt to branch out. I do not see Sony changing the formula too much on PlayStation Plus when it comes to the PlayStation 4, as it is already very successful on the PlayStation 3. Jim Ryan seems to believe we shall see much more of the service, so its future remains solid.
Whether it remains the premiere paid subscription plan on the system is up in the air, however, judging by Sony President of Worldwide Studios Shuhei Yoshida's lofty dream of gamers have access to thousands of games with one subscription. Sony has not confirmed anything about new subscription plans, besides PlayStation Plus, so what features actually make it to the PlayStation 4 when it is expected to ship during the holiday season is up in the air.
